New Insights paper into NCEA achievement

19 July 2024

NZQA has published an Insights paper looking at NCEA achievement and how six key indicators show change over time.

The paper looks at trends in the following six key indicators:

  • Overall attainment
  • Certificate endorsements
  • Average number of credits assessed
  • Students assessed in four or more courses who achieved NCEA
  • Types of standards assessed - Year 12 and Year 13 students
  • Grade distribution profiles for achievement standards.

Examining how NCEAs are achieved, and what has changed over time, provides important insights into how schools and students engage with the NCEA system.

Analysis across all six key indicators shows that the way NCEAs are achieved varies for different school equity index groups.

The paper also shows how adjustments to the qualification settings – including in response to COVID-19 – have affected each of the indicators over time.
