Background

In August 2023, NZQA announced a trial for an optional Notifications Gateway to streamline the submission of certain 2024 SAC applications.

An interim evaluation of the process has shown generally positive feedback. However, a comprehensive review will only be possible after the full academic year, including the completion of the end-of-year exams.

Extension of trial

To ensure a thorough evaluation, the trial for Level 1 students will continue for 2025.

This extension of time will allow NZQA to gather additional insights and make a final decision on the future of the Notifications Gateway.

What schools and kura need to know

The trial Notifications Gateway will continue to be available for schools and kura making new SAC applications for students undertaking NCEA Level 1 in 2025.

All existing SAC provision for current Level 1 and Level 2 students can be rolled over to 2025 by schools and kura from 1 February 2025.

New SAC applications for 2025 using the Notifications Gateway can be submitted to NZQA from 6 January 2025. Schools and kura can prepare and save drafts within the system before submitting to NZQA.

New SAC applications for 2025 using the Approvals Gateway can be submitted to NZQA from 1 October 2024.

NZQA will monitor the use of the Notifications Gateway to ensure that submissions align with student needs. Monitoring may result in requiring some applications to be submitted via the Approvals Gateway only.

During the trial, NZQA reserves the right to restrict access to the Notifications Gateway if necessary, either for specific schools or kura, or for certain categories of SAC applications.
