Information on May co-requisite results release 2025

We are aiming for the results from the May assessment event to be available to students and schools on the following dates:

Literacy - Reading

25 June

Literacy - Writing

14 July

Numeracy

14 July

Te Reo MatatiniTe Reo Torohū

14 July

Te Reo Matatini Te Reo Whakaputa

14 July

Te Pāngarau

14 July

These turnaround timeframes are considerably shorter than they were following the May 2024 event.

The reductions in turnaround time reflect and respond to feedback from schools that results are needed faster, so additional teaching and learning can occur as required before the second assessment event.

There are three main reasons we believe we will be able to reduce timeframes:

  • We continue to drive efficiencies in how we manage assessment responses and results processing.
  • We are introducing Automated Text Scoring to mark written components of Writing assessments taken digitally.
  • We are increasing our use of automated marking to mark digital responses for some of the questions (such as multiple-choice) within the Writing, Numeracy and Te Reo Torohū assessments.

Please note that students sitting assessments by paper may get their results back later than those sitting digitally due to the additional time needed for receiving and processing paper scripts from schools and the associated human marking requirements.

We are continuing to look for efficiencies to reduce turnaround times in future assessment events.

Changes to marking and submission system

Previously, co-requisite assessments have used a different marking system and approach than end-of-year examinations. For 2025, we are standardising our marking approach and are moving the majority of digital marking to one system.

For assessments completed on paper, the submission tool may be different from what you used last year. Details can be found on the On the day page in the Co-requisite hub, within your school portal.

Automated Text Scoring

Starting at the May 2025 assessment event, Automated Text Scoring will be used on all digitally submitted Writing assessments.

The Automated Text Scoring is a stand-alone technology tool that has been trained specifically on past co-requisite Writing assessments that were marked by humans in order to learn what makes a piece of writing meet the requirements of the standard.

NZQA conducted a small-scale trial of Automated Text Scoring on Writing assessment responses from the May 2024 assessment event, and a large-scale trial using 35,000 Writing assessment responses from September 2024. These trials allowed us to compare the results with scores provided by our regular markers.

While the trials have provided us with confidence in the accuracy of Automated Text Scoring, to continue to quality assure for consistency and accuracy we are also using a human check-marking process. Human marking will be done where the student is on the boundary of achieving/ not achieving the Writing standard, which will amount to approximately 40% of assessments.

Using Automated Text Scoring is a crucial component of reducing the time it takes to mark Writing assessments, reducing the workload on markers who are practising teachers, and enabling marking to be conducted outside of school holidays.
