If you have difficulty updating details, please get in contact with your School Relationship Manager.

School data

Secondary school statistics

Go to the Secondary school statistics page (external link)

The finalised 2022 Statistics, Principal and STEM reports are now available on your Provider Login.

The Ministry of Education has also released (ie, they are in the public domain) the national 2022 results of Literacy and Numeracy | Te Reo Matatini me te Pāngarau.

National 2022 results of Literacy and Numeracy / Te Reo Matatini me te Pāngarau (external link) - NCEA website

A new PDF of Enrolment-Based Measure FAQs has been added to the Statistics page on your Provider Login answering questions about the enrolment-based measure.

Schools can view their Derived Grade Profile through their Provider Login under Reports. The report defaults to 2023 so you will need to choose 2022 to see last year’s data.

A Derived Grade Comparison Outlier Report is generated when a school’s pattern of derived grades at scale in a subject differs by two standard deviations or more from students’ final external results, with reference to the national pattern for schools of a similar decile band. It is available under High Security Features> Outlier Reports.

The report defaults to 2023 so you will need to choose 2022 to see whether your school has any outliers. If the outlier page has the message ‘No comparison report available to download’ it means your 2022 data did not identify any outlier subjects.

An Internal External Comparison Outlier Report is generated when the difference between a school’s internal and external results in a subject differs from the national pattern for schools of a similar decile band. It is available under High Security Features> Outlier Reports.

Once more, the report defaults to 2023 so you will need to choose 2022 to see whether your school has any outliers. If the outlier page has the message ‘No comparison report available to download’ it means your data did not identify any outlier subjects.

Updated NZQA School portal / Provider login

As part of the ongoing NZQA revamp of its public website, a new School Portal is being launched in May 2023.

The first features available to Teachers and Principals’ Nominees will be a new Home Page and menu structure linking to all the current portal functionality. Over the coming months, new and updated features will be added as they become available. These features have been tailored for schools and aim to provide a better overall user experience; the purpose of the new School Portal aligns with the strategic objective of making NZQA a digital first environment.

The NZQA Contact Centre has been provided an overview of the new portal, so staff will be able to assist with any questions you may have.

Digital assessment on Assessment Master (AM)

Assessment Master training support and guidance material

NZQA is planning additional support and guidance for schools and kura on preparing for delivery of external digital assessments using NZQA’s online platform, Assessment Master.

This involves a package of material including online sessions, guides, and an eLearning course on the NZQA Learning Management System, Pūtake.

Go to Pūtake (external link)

  • Online sessions will be held early May to help prepare schools / kura delivering Literacy & Numeracy / Te Reo Matatini me te Pāngarau corequisite digital assessments. These sessions are also available for schools / kura involved in the June assessments for Te Ao Haka and Te Reo Māori.
  • Assessment Master training webinar sessions will be held 15-19 May. More information will be available soon about what will be covered and how you can be involved.
  • A Pūtake eLearning course is available in English and Te Reo Māori. Instructions for accessing the courses are available in the guides and in the Provider login.
  • You can now access the following material in your School Provider login (Assessment Master Guidance folder):
    • the Administrator guide and the Supervisor guide, which have step by step instructions for each role and links to support videos.
    • job aids in English and Te Reo Māori. These are stripped down instructions from the guides.
    • instructions on how to access AM training in Pūtake for schools and kura.

Digital Practice Exams (DPEs)

Digital practice exams (DPEs) using Assessment Master will be available to schools for 3 weeks between 4-22 September.

Bookmark the updated 2023 web page for quick reference about what’s involved in DPEs, available resources and where to get help.

NZQA digital practice exams 2023 (external link)

Subjects and Standards for DPE 2023:

  • English NCEA Level 1 - 90849, 90850, 90851
  • Te Reo Māori NCEA Level 1 - 91087, 91088
  • Te Reo Rangatira NCEA Level 1 - 91659, 91662, 91664

Make entries for DPEs in your SMS, or in the School Portal for Web Entry schools (those without an SMS).

DPE entries should be submitted to NZQA by data file as soon as possible; entries are open until 1 August. This is the same process as last year.

Please note your students must have specific DPE entries to be able to sit the practice exam on Assessment Master.

Kaiako/teachers will have access to the platform from the week starting 24 August until 18 October, allowing time for both preparation and marking.

Please let your School Relationship Manager know by email if you would like to nominate someone other than the Principal’s Nominee to be the key contact/administrator for these digital practice exams.

This will assist NZQA in managing support for DPEs.

NCEA Change Programme

Assessment timetable

The updated 2023 assessment timetable was published on our Te Aka webpage on Friday, 5 May – this covers assessment dates, subjects, standards, assessment methods, review and reconsideration dates.

Literacy and Numeracy / Te Reo Matatini me te Pāngarau co-requisite

All schools / kura should have made their entries for the June assessment opportunity by now.

Please check:

  • the accuracy of these entries through Key Indicators > Digital Exams.
  • the Error/Warning Report once your data file has been processed. A message stating No assessment opportunity received requires the assessment window to be nominated for your entries in Literacy and Numeracy / Te Reo Matatini me te Pāngarau to be processed. Please make the required changes and resubmit your data file at the earliest opportunity.

Once you receive login credentials, you can also check the student entries for each standard on Assessment Master. If you need to make any changes, please submit a data file as soon as possible.

An overview of the co-requisite standards with a link to Results can be found here:

The September 2022 CAAs for version 1 of Reading (32403), Writing (32405) and Numeracy (32406) are now available on NCEA.Education:

Reading - 32403 (external link)

Writing - 32405 (external link)

Numeracy - 32406 (external link)

These assessments can also be accessed through your Provider Login under General Security Features> Assessment Material.

The flexibility allowable in the delivery of the assessment activities has been clarified so that schools, kura and other NCEA providers can decide whether their whole cohort of students undertakes each assessment at the same time, at different times on the same day or across multiple days within the specified week. The Writing assessment, however, should be held on the same day for the whole cohort.

Literacy and numeracy assessment information (external link)

Check out updated Literacy and Numeracy assessment information on the NCEA.Education website and the new Te Reo Matatini me te Pāngarau subject page on NZQA’s website.

Te Reo Matatini me te Pāngarau

Schools, kura and other NCEA providers have flexibility and can decide:

  • who supervises the CAAs
  • what day(s) CAAs are held on during the assessment week – noting there is no time limit for the CAAs, so long as each can be completed within a single session
  • whether their learners undertake the reading, numeracy, te reo matatini and/or pāngarau assessments at the same time, at different times on the same day, or across multiple days within the specified week
  • the room configuration for the assessments
  • whether learners are eligible for Special Assessment Conditions (SAC).

Assessor Practice Tool (APT)

NZQA is seeking feedback from teachers on the latest pilot of our Assessor Practice Tool.

This update aims to support the introduction of the new Achievement Standards.

The APT is designed to allow teachers to practise making assessor judgements on samples of student work. They will then be able to see the grade awarded by a moderation panel and the reasons for that grade.

Student samples for the following subjects will be available to explore and provide feedback on in the pilot:

  • Business Studies
  • Chemistry
  • DVC
  • English
  • Home Economics
  • Media Studies
  • Physical Education
  • Statistics
  • Technology
  • Visual Arts.

Teacher feedback is an essential part of the development during the pilot phase, and we are keen to hear as many opinions as possible. Please let your teachers know about this opportunity.

The pilot will be open from 8 May to 16 June and can be accessed on the APT Pilot Site using the teacher’s Education Sector Logon. Teachers will need to have the NZQA LMS Teacher role activated.

Te Ao Haka
