How the comparison works
A project between New Zealand and Australia compared the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF) and the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). It found that the 2 frameworks can be broadly comparable.
The project relates to the:
- Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement (external link) – Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade
- Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Arrangement (external link) – Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment
The comparison makes it easier for education providers and employers to understand how qualifications compare to similar local qualifications.
It does not guarantee that New Zealand or Australia will automatically recognise a qualification as equivalent.
Comparing the levels on both frameworks
Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) | New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF) |
Level 1 | Level 1 |
Level 2 | Level 2 |
Level 3 | Level 3 |
Level 4 | Level 4 |
Level 5 | Level 5 |
Level 6 | Level 6 |
Level 7 | Level 7 |
Level 8 | Level 8 |
Level 9 | Level 9 |
Level 10 | Level 10 |
Australia does not include Senior Secondary Certificate of Education qualifications as a level in the AQF.
New Zealand includes National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) qualifications on the NZQCF.
