We recognise the education system is not yet delivering equitable outcomes for Māori.
To remove barriers to equity in education, we are working with learners, their whānau, iwi, hapū and other groups. We are making sure our products and services meet the needs of Māori.
We're also supporting education providers to remove barriers to equity, to provide accessibility services and deliver equitable outcomes for learners.

Who we'll work with

Many hands make light work
We will work with a number of people and agencies to improve equity.
For example:
- ākonga
- whānau
- iwi, hapū
- community organisations
- education organisations and agencies
- Ngā Kaitūhono, our Māori advisory board
- Te Kāhui Ākonga, our ākonga advisory group, and tertiary associations.

To honour te Tiriti o Te Waitangi we:
- enable Māori to achieve education success as Māori
- co-design products, processes and initiatives with iwi, hapū and Māori
- take steps to make sure Māori interests are advanced.
Our actions
We will:
- create the space for Māori to exercise rangatiratanga in relation to relevant aspects of assessment, qualifications, and quality assurance
- partner with iwi, hapū and Māori in the development of our products and services
- exercise kāwanatanga in a manner that actively protects Māori interests
- continue to embed mātauranga Māori within qualifications, including NCEA
- proactively support the success of ākonga Māori in achieving qualifications
- give effect to te Tiriti o Waitangi and align to Ka Hikitia Ka Hāpaitia and Tau Mai Te Reo through the delivery of Te Kōkiritanga
- improve our te ao and te reo Māori organisational capability to build our cultural competency.

Ngā Kaitūhono, our advisory board, makes sure our approach to supporting mātauranga Māori is consistent with te ao Māori values and expectations. Ngā Kaitūhono also provides advice and guidance on Te Kōkiritanga.
Equity in STEM
We partner with Māori, education agencies and others to enable equitable achievement for ākonga Māori learners in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects at all levels of NCEA.
As part of this we:
- encourage ākonga into science, technology, engineering and mathematics pathways
- create STEM related NCEA information and resources
- deliver workshops to whānau to help their children consider STEM subjects and achieve success in NCEA
- have Te Kōkiritanga, a strategic action plan which includes achievement in STEM as a goal
- share achievement data with education agencies and iwi so they can help increase participation in STEM study and careers
- support the Pūhoro STEM academy.
Our key message is STEM-related subjects provide the broadest range of career opportunities.
