About the new derived grade application tool

The application tool Principals' Nominees use when submitting derived grade applications has changed

We’ve launched a new online application for Principals' Nominees to use when applying for derived grades on a student’s behalf.

You'll now use the Applications tool in MyNZQA to submit and manage derived grade applications.

Changes to the derived grade application tool

The updated tool is in the new MyNZQA school portal, select School administration then Applications.

Although it's similar to the previous application tool, there are some differences:

  • there's dedicated pre-approval application for national representation applicants that you can use when a student's grades aren’t yet available
  • you can now upload students’ supporting evidence in the application, instead of having to share documents over email separately
  • the application tool automatically displays the exams and standards for which students have entries over their impacted dates
  • you can see students’ unexpected event grades if we’ve received these through your school’s regular data file submission. Grades can be updated as required
  • you can easily see the status of each application. In Progress means we're reviewing the application. If approved, the status changes to Approved in December after all exams are over. Declined applications have a Declined status as soon as they're processed
  • secure communications between the school and NZQA happen within the application tool, rather than over email
  • you'll receive automated emails letting you know when a student’s application is declined or if we need you to provide additional information in the application tool.

We’ve also updated the application form students use. It’s now simpler and easier to complete on a computer.

The derived grade application process is the same

The overall process for applying for derived grades has not changed.

Students still need to complete the paper form and give the completed form, along with their supporting evidence, to their school.

Principals’ Nominees still need to lodge all applications for students.
