This annotated exemplar is intended for teacher use only. Annotated exemplars are extracts of student evidence, with commentary, that explain key parts of a standard. These help teachers make assessment judgements at the grade boundaries.

For Excellence, the student needs to write a variety of text types in effective German that communicate information and express and justify ideas and opinions.

Effective German will be shown by development of the information, ideas and opinions which is controlled and integrated and capable selection and successful use of a range of language and language features that are fit for purpose and audience.

Communication will not be hindered by inconsistencies.

There is development of the information, ideas and opinions which is generally controlled and integrated, e.g.  ‘...es nicht gerecht ist, also jetzt muss ich in Australien wohnen’ (1) and ‘Deshalb würde man diese Stadt lieben, wenn man sich für Geschichte interessiert’ (6).

The student uses a range of language and language features. Grammar and vocabulary are capably selected and successfully used. They express their future plans, e.g. ‘das ist was ich machen werde’(3). The student informs classmates about Klagenfurt and persuades them to visit, e.g. ‘wurde gegründet’ (8) and ‘wo oder was Klagenfurt ist’ (5). Information is provided about Michael Schumacher, and the student justifies choosing him as a role model: ‘sondern die Rennen auch gewann’ (9) and ‘Wenn ich so reich … wäre, würde ich ...’ (10).

For a more secure Excellence, there would need to be more consistent evidence of capable selection and successful use of language, e.g. ‘beim viele Fotosmachen (2), ‘Eine Familie kann erwarten’ (4) and ‘Könnte man darin schwimmen, weil ...’ (7). Such inconsistencies do not compromise communication.

Because this standard allows for editing and reworking, more consistency with word order and additional development would result in a more secure Excellence. 

For Merit, the student needs to write a variety of text types in effective German that communicate information and express and justify ideas and opinions.

Convincing German will be shown by development of the information, ideas and opinions which is generally credible and connected and selection and use of a range of language and language features that are fit for purpose and audience.

Communication will not be significantly hindered by inconsistencies.

There is some development and connecting of information, ideas and opinions, such as ‘Ich habe vor Jura zu studieren. Ich bin dafür geeignet. Ich bin sowohl ernst als auch selbstsicher’ (2), ‘Hamburg nie besucht? …dann ist Hamburg perfekt für Sie’ (4)and ‘An einem sonniger und sehr heißer Tag besuchte ich München, die ganze abwechslungsreich war’ (9).

A range of language and language features are selected and used convincingly, such as ‘wenn es klappt, … den Olympiaturm besteigen.’ (3), ‘ist somit die zweitgrößte Stadt Deutschlands.’ (5), ‘Die Speicherstadt wurde ... gebaut.’ (8),  ‘Plötzlich sah ich meine Traumgirl! ... Sie war mein absoluter Schwarm!’ (12), ‘ohne ein Wort zu sagen’ (13) and ‘er ließ mich lange warten’ (15).

To reach Excellence, there will be additional evidence of controlled and integrated development, such as similar ideas expressed with a range of language, avoiding repetition, eg. ‘werde ich’ (1), ‘kann man’ or ’man kann’ (7), ‘nicht nur ... sondern auch’interspersed with ‘sowohl .. als auch’ (11).   

For Excellence, communication would not be hindered by inconsistencies such as  ‘für die gesamte Welt’ (7) and ‘mein Geld nicht bezahlen musste’ (14).

For Merit, the student needs to write a variety of text types in effective German that communicate information and express and justify ideas and opinions.

Convincing German will be shown by development of the information, ideas and opinions which is generally credible and connected and selection and use of a range of language and language features that are fit for purpose and audience.

Communication will not be significantly hindered by inconsistencies.

The student expresses and justifies information, ideas and opinions, such as ‘Wenn ich die Schule verlasse,will ich Geschichte studieren, weil ich mich dafür interessiere.’ (1),‘Letzte Ferien bin ich nach Salzburg gefahren, um an meinem Austausch teilzunehmen’ (5) and ‘ich finde das …, weil die See mir gefällt’ (8). 

There is some development of opinions and information, using a range of appropriate language and language features such as ‘hoffe ich zwei Kinder, damit meine Familie nicht zu groß ist’ (3), ‘Der Grazer Dom wurde 1550 gebaut und ist sehr eindrucksvoll.’ (7) ‘Es war einmal...’ (9)‘Und wenn sie nicht gestorben sind...’(12), ‘Als der Prinz ankam, fand er…’ (10) and‘Was hat sich verändert? Die elfte Fee hat ihm Vertrauen beigebracht’ (11).

For a more secure Merit, there would be additional evidence of mastery of a range of language, moving from simply providing information to further evidence of giving opinions and conveying and justifying ideas.

Also, for a more secure Merit, there would be less impact on communication from inconsistencies such as ‘Oder in der Medizin Branche’ (2), ‘ich will viel Spaß!’ (4) and‘Ich habe das prima gefunded’ (6).

For Achieved, the student needs to write a variety of text types in German that communicate information and express and justify ideas and opinions.

Communication will be achieved overall, despite inconsistencies.

The student communicates information and expresses ideas and opinions: ‘Ich habe Deutsch seit 5 Jahren gelernt und ich hoffe, eines Tages nach Deutschland zu fahren.’ (1), ‘Ich dacte, dass mein Dorf größer sein würde aber es ist kein Problem, weil Nürnberg nur zwanzig minuten mit dem Zug von Stöckach entfernt ist.’ (5), ‘Ich glaube, dass ich kein Verhältnis haben könnte, ob es nur im Internet ist.’ (8)

There is some evidence of development, to justify and connect the information, ideas and opinions: ‘Ich bin der Meinung, dass man diese fantastische Stadt besuchen muss, weil man das beste Deutsche Kultur erfahren kann.’ (3),‘Etwas interessantes, das ich nie erwartet habe, war das Essen!’ (6), ‘Ehrlichkeit ist ganz wichtig für mich und ich bin der Meinung, ich kann nicht Ehrlichkeit im Internet finden.’ (10)

To reach Merit, there would be additional evidence of a range of language used convincingly, such as ‘sau’ in Texts A and B (2) and ‘ich bin der Meinung’ (3) (10).

Communication is achieved overall, but to reach Merit communication would not be significantly hindered by inconsistencies such as ‘so schön will ich wieder gehen. Kennen Sie ...’ (4), ‘ich habe viel zunehmen’ (7), ‘es konnte ein großes Luge sein’ (9) and ‘über ihrer Personlichkeit’ (11).

For Achieved, the student needs to write a variety of text types in German that communicate information and express and justify ideas and opinions.

Communication will be achieved overall, despite inconsistencies.

In Texts A and B, the student communicates information and expresses ideas and opinions: ‘Ein Vorteil ist, dass man muss für das Telefonrechnung bezahlen nicht, aber ein Nachteil ist, dass man die Hausordnung folgen muss’ (2), ‘Insbesondere würde ich dem Eiffelturm besuchen’ (4), ‘Man kann diese Stadt nicht verlassen, ohne das Rathaus zu besichtigen’ (5), ‘Vergessen Sie nicht, Hamburg bald zu besuchen!’ (8).

Text C is a narrative which uses the style and language of a Märchen, e.g. ‘Ich kam in der Dämmerung in das kleine Dorf. Das Dorf war sehr schön in der Abendsonne’ (9) and ‘Das Tier zerkratzte an die Tür. Die alte Frau wimmerte’ (12).

The student makes some attempt to justify the ideas and opinions, e.g. ‘Ich bin sowohl optimistisch als auch zuverlässig, weil ich selbstsicher und begeistert bin’ (1), ‘Hamburg hat die weltweit besten Miniatur-Welt und es hat die größte Modelleisenbahn der Welt’ (6), ‘Wenn ich könnte, würde ich in Hamburg für einem Jahr zu leben, weil Hamburg ist die beste Stadt in der Welt’ (7).

Communication is achieved overall, despite inconsistencies.

For a more secure Achieved, the inconsistencies will have less impact on communication, e.g. ‘Wenn ich bekomme ein Arzt,’ (3), ‘eine Chil lief mir den Rücken hinunter’ (10) and ‘die einen zerlumpt Umhang trug’ (11). 

For Achieved, the student needs to write a variety of text types in German that communicate information and express and justify ideas and opinions.

Communication will be achieved overall, despite inconsistencies.

There is an attempt at language at the required level to give information, e.g. ‘Wir hat ein sehr gut Verhaltnis und wir streiten nie’ (1),‘Mein Traum Freund muss hat eine sehr nette persönlichkeit’ (6) and ‘Drogen können krank machen und töten, wenn genommen oft’ (12).

There are attempts to express and justify opinions, such as ‘Hazel ist sehr wichtig für mich, weil sie so nett und lustig ist’ (2), ‘Für mich es ist wichtig, dass mein Freund ist nicht dick, weil höffentlich würden wir sport spielen’ (10) and‘Ich finde Sport sehr wichtig, deswegen mache ich verschiedene Sportarten’ (11).

To reach Achieved, information will be relevant to the context, e.g. ‘Pommes sind sehr ungesund, aber ich finde Pommes so lecker!’ (4) and ‘Ich finde Sport sehr Spaß und dankbar’ (13).

There needs to be evidence of some mastery of language at Level 7 of the NZC, including formulaic phrases: ‘Sie hat gut Rat geben’ (3) and ‘könnten wir immer dabei’ (7).

Additional evidence of mastery of lower level language would also contribute to communicating overall, e.g. ‘würde ich ein Kinder namen Hazel’ (5) ‘Mein Traum Freund muss hat …’ (7), muss größer als ich (8), ‘musst spiel’ (9).
