Clarification details
Updated August 2015. This document has been updated to address new issues that have arisen from moderation.
The intent of this standard
The intent of this standard is that students examine art works to demonstrate understanding of the impact of media and processes on style and meaning in art works. Understanding will be demonstrated by explanations and evaluations of the connections between media and processes, and both style and meaning in selected art works. The examination of impact of more than one medium and more than one process are required.
Supporting evidence
Supporting evidence is required at achievement level. This is relevant information from art works or about other aspects of art, such as personal style and social context that is used to support the explanations and evaluations of the impact of media and processes. General background information that is not linked to the required explanationsdoes not contribute to the assessable evidence.
Style
Style refers to the characteristics of an artist, movement, period or place. Understanding of the impact of media and processes on style will be apparent in the student’s use of appropriate terminology, e.g. classical, minimalist, expressionist, when explaining and evaluating the impact of media and processes on art works.
The selection of art works
Art works may be selected by the teacher or the student.
Evidence
The examination of an artist’s work may be done as a class or group exercise; however the assessed response must be individual. Teachers may use a range of activities, however individual written or recorded verbal evidence is required for moderation.
Acceptable explanations may be in the form of notes or annotated images; however bullet-pointed lists of single words will not provide sufficient evidence for achievement.
Grade level indicators
- An achievement level response will typically consist of explanations that link specified aspects of media and processes with the styles and meanings in selected art works, referring to specific aspects of the works.
- The in-depth understanding required for Merit will be demonstrated by detailed explanations of the connections between specified aspects of media and processes and specific stylistic features and meanings in the art works.
- At Excellence, perception will be demonstrated by evaluative discussions of the various impacts of different media and processes on the styles and meanings of the art works, supported by relevant contextual evidence.
