Clarification details
Demonstrating understanding
The standard requires students to demonstrate understanding of concepts of law, reasons for developing laws and the characteristics of an effective law.
Concepts of law are stated as laws, rules and customs. Students are expected to be able to distinguish between these concepts in order to describe the characteristics of, and the reasons for, developing laws.
Defining and distinguishing between laws, rules and customs
Students are expected to be able to define and distinguish between laws, rules and customs, but understand that characteristics and reasons for development apply only to laws. Students may make comparisons with rules and customs in their descriptions, but separate reasons for the development and characteristics of rules and customs are not needed.
