Clarification details
Updated December 2018. This document has been updated in its entirety to address issues that have arisen during moderation.
The purpose of clarifications
We create clarification documents to help people understand the current requirements of achievement standards. Clarifications do not introduce new criteria, change the intent of the standard, or change what we expect from assessment.
These documents unpack and explain the language and intent of the standard so people interpret and apply the standard consistently. We provide examples or guidance as illustrations only. They are not prescriptions or requirements.
For official requirements, always refer to the current version of the achievement standard as published by NZQA.
Outcomes
The student responses must have a clear aim or intended outcome(s) for the participants, with an explanation of why they were selected. The event should have an intended outcome rather than just organising the event.
Examine
Student responses must provide an explanation that includes:
- the intended aims/purpose
- the planning
- the implementation
- the outcomes
- the ways in which the outcomes relate to the planned aim/purpose.
Clear links should be made between the planning, intended outcomes and actual outcomes for the participants.
Examine comprehensively
Student responses must evaluate the implementation, the outcome(s) and the ways in which the outcome(s) relate to the planned aims/purpose for the participants. Judgements should be made which include:
- what worked, or did not work, when implementing the physical activity event or opportunity
- what may be done in the future or be modified to ensure outcomes are as intended
- supporting evidence from the physical activity event or opportunity.
Supporting evidence
Supporting evidence is required to back up the in-depth examination required for Merit and Excellence. Examples of evidence include; personal accounts, photographs, participant or stakeholder evaluations.
Planning as part of the implementation
The planning of the actual event/opportunity should be included in the student work which could be used as further evidence in the evaluation. This should include the reasons why the course of action was chosen and relate to the intended aim/outcome(s).
