Paulo's story
I'm of Samoan and NZ European descent and attended Birkenhead College.
After my undergraduate degree, I worked in engineering, project management and management consulting.
This work was for the Australasian firm, Xigo. It's a Deloitte Fast 50 company.
Most recently, I worked in the UK with Arup, an engineering consultancy.
During this time, I completed a postgraduate qualification in structural engineering. This strengthened the technical areas I studied in my undergraduate degree.
Developing my soft skills and improving my management skills helped advance my career. It also gave me the chance to work on some of the most challenging projects in Australasia and the UK.
Many of my roles have been quite different from those usually associated with being an engineer.
I have just completed some Master's in Business Administration (MBA) modules with the University of Warwick. I hope to become a specialist consultant in the energy industry.
I took STEM as I enjoy problem solving and science based subjects. I studied engineering because I'm interested in the application of science, where we can see positive outcomes.
For example, using physics in bridge design gives us structures that work well but also look good.
