The dates for external assessment in 2024 are now available on the NZQA website.

This includes dates for Te Ao Haka and all Level 1 Common Assessment Activities and Tūmahi Aromatawai Pātahi that are not included in the end of year examination timetable.

The dates also include two assessment opportunities for the Literacy and Numeracy co-requisite standards in May and September, and two for Te Reo Matatini and Pāngarau in June and September, and a third via portfolio submissions (Kete Manarua) in October.

While NZQA had planned to offer three assessment opportunities for the Literacy and Numeracy co-requisites in 2024, maintaining the two opportunities (as in 2023) will help ensure each can be developed, supported and delivered to the highest possible standard.

The intended third assessment opportunity for Literacy and Numeracy will be introduced in 2025.

As announced in circular AS2023/8, end of year examinations in 2024 will take place between 5 November and 29 November. As in previous years, the full examination timetable will be released following the conclusion of this year’s examination round.

With 2024 being the first year of full implementation of the new NCEAs, we intend to monitor how the assessment cycle is being implemented. While we have learned much from the Level 1 pilots, we want to understand how the new cycle of assessment events are being experienced by schools and kura.

We will be seeking feedback from schools and kura during 2024 so that we can make any necessary changes to the pattern of assessment in subsequent years.
