Managing learners who arrive at an exam with COVID symptoms

Advice and processes for managing students with COVID symptoms at exam time

The Principal's Nominee or Exam Centre Manager can ask a student to stay away from the exam if they have COVID-like symptoms.

The student should be advised to get a COVID-19 test, however, the school cannot require this.

No additional evidence is required to apply for a Derived Grade.

An application for a Derived Grade can be made through the Covid Inclusions link in the Derived Grade section of your login page:

  1. Select the student
  2. On the next screen select “UEG (Outside Level 3 Lockdown)”
  3. Choose “COVID symptoms at exam (add date of exam)” for the reason
  4. Note the session (am or pm), level and subject and include the date in the text box
  5. Tick the attestation
  6. Submit the application.

NOTE The application will apply only to the date of the exam. If they do not attend further exams, consider making a further derived grade application for them, following the “isolating on medical advice” process below.

Please make sure that the Unexpected Event Grades held by NZQA in your final data file are accurate, as these will be used to provide a grade for the student. You can use the Unexpected Event Grade report in your Provider Login page to check.

You can check your applications and their status using the COVID Inclusions report.

Please contact your School Relationship Manager if you need more information.

Managing learners isolating while they wait for test results

The test result information from the Ministry of Health is the evidence needed to support an application for a Derived Grade. The outcome of the test should be shared with the Principal's Nominee.

  1. Select the student
  2. On the next screen select UEG (Outside Level 3 Lockdown)
  3. Choose “Isolating after taking a COVID Test (add date of test)” for the reason
  4. Note the first session (am or pm), level and subject and include the date in the text box
  5. Tick the attestation
  6. Submit the application.
