Clarification details
Updated December 2016. This document has been updated following changes to the Conditions of Assessment.
Focus of the standard
The standard assesses a student’s ability to examine a media text to demonstrate understanding of the use and effect of three elements of the chosen media text.
Range
Students should discuss a range of media elements which cover the language, structure and conventions of a medium. For example, for a moving image text, a student might discuss an element from each of camera work, editing and sound, while for advertising they might focus on elements from image selection, layout and language use.
Selecting appropriate media texts
Teachers or students can select the media text and/or elements to be investigated. Student choices should be made in consultation with the teacher.
Framing the investigation
Students may find it helpful to have the task scaffolded into manageable steps. For example:
- select and describe, in detail, three selected elements
- explain why/how each element is used, e.g.
- the element’s role or effect within the scene/media text as a whole
- how it is linked to the purpose/genre of the media text
- the effect on the audience
- its role in supporting main themes/mood/message.
- explain the effect of the combined use of elements.
Integration of standards
The standard can be offered in conjunction with another standard, such as the external genre paper (90992), or as background research for the 90993 design and plan task.
