AS 90994 Clarification

Clarification for AS 90994: Complete a media product using a specified range of conventions, from a design and plan

Clarification details

Updated December 2014. This document has been updated in its entirety to address issues that have arisen from moderation.

Focus of the standard

The standard assesses a student’s ability to use at least five media conventions in the production of a media product based on a design and plan.

The brief

The completed media product must meet the requirements of the brief for the design and plan. The brief must be specific in order for students to ‘meet the brief’. The brief can be provided by the teacher.

Group work

Group size should not exceed three students, so that all students can show their individual contribution to the production process. Production logs or equivalent must provide sufficient specific evidence of each individual’s contribution to the media product.

Evidence for assessment

Each student must specify exactly what he/she did in a detailed way, rather than just list roles and responsibilities. Evidence can be gathered through teacher observations and peer evaluations, although these must be sufficiently specific to clearly identify individual student contributions and quality of work.

Reflection/adaption of design and plan

Reflecting on the practicalities/contingencies discussed in the design and plan can be a useful way for students to meet this aspect of the standard.

Integration of 90993 and 90994

Teachers may choose to assess 90993 and 90994 concurrently, so that students keep on reworking and reflecting on their design and plan throughout the production process. This can be produce more meaningful evaluations of the production process than the completion of a template evaluation sheet once the media product has been completed.

As each standard needs to be assessed separately, teachers need to develop strategies to differentiate the reflection for each standard. For example:

  • students could use different coloured post it notes in their visual diaries when working through their production from the ones they used to reflect and rework in the design and plan stage
  • students could keep blogs throughout the pre-production, production and post-production processes so that reworking and reflection of their ideas and plans are continued through the creation of their media product.
