AS 91255 Clarification

Clarification for AS 91255: Write developed media text for a specific target audience

Clarification details

Updated December 2017. This document has been updated to address issues that have arisen from moderation.

Focus of the standard

Students will produce one piece of developed media writing demonstrating understanding of a range of conventions of current media texts. The work must reflect level 7 of the curriculum, where the focus is on students applying their knowledge of conventions of current media writing through a writing process from developing ideas to final copy for an audience.

Conventions

Student need to produce writing that demonstrates detailed knowledge of the conventions and structure for a specific media text type.

For example, where students are asked to write a feature article, it is important students use the conventions for feature articles, as opposed to other types of writing such as news articles or opinion pieces. This will include a focus on primary research and interviews as the basis of the story.

When writing scripts, it is important the conventions used are relevant for the particular text type chosen.  For example, the structure for a screenplay is different to a script written for a documentary or for a radio script.

Drafting

Students are required to craft their writing which means a range of drafts should be part of the writing process. Drafting will allow students to demonstrate deliberate choices made to engage and hold the attention of the target audience, such as vocabulary/diction, conventions choice, language structures and syntax. These drafts should be included with materials sent for moderation.
