Clarification for US 8994: Examine a social institution

Updated December 2017. This document has been updated in its entirety to address issues that have arisen from moderation.

The two Evidence Requirements cover three aspects, and each of these needs to be included in the examination of one social institution. They include:

  • the key characteristics of the institution and their variation in time and place
  • the institution’s function, and  
  • its influence on individuals and society.

Commonly used institutions include, kinship and marriage, the family, religion, education, the media and work.

Characteristics

Key characteristics of the institution can include how it is structured and organised, and the processes, values and norms involved in maintaining the institution.

Influence

The influence the social institution has on individuals and society is a significant aspect of the standard where the student should show understanding of the relationship between society and the institution.
