Evidence requirements
A minimum of two tasks is required for the standard. Four minutes is the suggested guideline across both tasks to ensure sufficient evidence is generated.
When assessing this standard for a grade, the teacher needs to ensure that the student is working consciously and reasonably consistently at the level rather than accidentally and occasionally. The two pieces are not assessed separately but rather as one whole body of work.
Recording student evidence
Assessed speaking evidence should be filmed in a single take. When using a laptop or iPad camera to film a speaking performance or interaction, the transcript cannot be displayed on the screen for the student to read as this affects the authenticity of the speaking evidence.
File formats for moderation
Speaking evidence for Te Reo Māori should not exceed 100 MB in size. The following file formats are required for inclusion in the moderation submission: MP4, AVI or MOV files. Further information about the digital submission of files is available in the external moderation application FAQs.

Presentations
Students are required to construct and deliver an oral presentation using their own language. Reciting a pūrākau from a public source such as a Tautoko or Wharekura bulletins will not contribute evidence for the standard.
When presenting on a topic that requires research, students may need guidance to ensure the content of the speaking is not solely a summary of research facts or a recounting of events.
At level 2, students should be able to express a personal point of view on an aspect of the topic. Statements made or views expressed need to be justified with evidence or examples that support the point of view.
For example, “Ki tōku nei whakaaro, he tino pai te pikitia nei nō mea, he tino pai te kaupapa. Ka kite ahau i te aroha i waenganui i a Paikea rāua ko Koro. Tuatahi, kāore a Koro i harikoa i te whānautanga o tētahi kōtiro, engari i te mutunga o te pikitia, ka kitea tōna aroha mō tana mokopuna, ā, ka kitea te hira a Pai ki te iwi”.
Evidence for two standards
It is not possible to use the transcript of a crafted writing task for a speaking standard without re-working the language. The context for both could be the same, but the evidence would need to be different. For example, a movie could be reviewed as a writing task and there could be an interaction with another student on the movie’s suitability for teenage viewing.
