New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) is inviting Registrations of Interest for a Contract role of Monitoring and Assessment Moderator for the following subject areas at New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF) levels 4 – 8.

What the role does

Monitoring and Assessment Moderators assist NZQA evaluators carry out programme monitoring activities.

Monitoring and Assessment Moderators evaluate programme documentation, assessment materials and learner work to ensure that Tertiary Education Organisation (TEO) assessment materials and assessor decisions are fair, valid, consistent and appropriate to the programmes’ learning outcomes.

Applicants must have a sound understanding of the principles of quality assessment practice and the NZQF.

They will have relevant industry experience, current experience delivering and assessing unit standard and/or non-standard based programmes and hold one or more of the following:

  • a relevant qualification at NZQF level 7 or higher, or have demonstrated equivalent knowledge and skills
  • an adult education and training qualification at NZQF level 5 or higher, or have demonstrated equivalent knowledge and skills
  • unit standards 4098 Use standards to assess candidate performance, or 30421 Carry out assessments against standards to make judgements of learner performance; 11551 Moderate assessment, 11552 Design and evaluate assessment materials, or equivalent knowledge and skills.

Key responsibilities

Monitoring and Assessment Moderators:

  • carry out moderation of student assessments and verify assessor decisions for unit standard and non-unit standard based programmes
  • evaluate TEO assessment practice information and make recommendations
  • liaise closely with Monitoring and Assessment Evaluators
  • write quality reports in accordance with NZQA policies, templates and instructions, and considering purpose, audience, and context
  • work to tight timeframes and quality standards.

Knowledge, competencies and skills

Applicants will have the following knowledge and skills:

  • Proven relevant moderation experience and current teaching and assessment experience in the subject areas mentioned above at NZQF levels 4 - 8.
  • In-depth understanding of the NZQF, assessment and moderation in the tertiary education sector.
  • Sufficient knowledge, experience and expertise to establish and maintain credibility with TEO academic staff.
  • Knowledge of the rights and responsibilities of the partners of the Treaty of Waitangi in an educational setting.
  • Clear and effective communication (oral, written, interpersonal).
  • The ability to work to stringent deadlines.
  • Sound judgement in decision making.
  • The ability to implement and maintain appropriate administrative and communication systems.

Availability

You need to give time to evaluate assessment documentation and produce moderation reports for submissions of learner work within 10 working days.

There are usually up to 24 pieces of learner work in one submission.

Resources

Monitoring and Assessment Moderators may be required to travel for or virtually join in NZQA staff meetings and training. NZQA will pay for related travel, accommodation and meal costs.

Moderator training is scheduled for the week commencing 18 September 2023.

Monitoring and Assessment Moderators must have access to a computer and the internet and own basic office facilities.

Payment

The payment for Monitoring and Assessment Moderators is $80.00 per hour.
