About managing national assessment in schools

How we work in partnership with schools to manage assessment for national qualifications

Assessment for national qualifications

Schools work in partnership with NZQA to manage assessment for national qualifications.

Assessment methods depend on the standards being assessed, and whether they are internal or external:

  • internally assessed standards are administered and assessed by schools
  • externally assessed standards may be assessed by NCEA examinations or portfolios.
  • NZQA runs NCEA examinations.

Managing National Assessment reviews

We review secondary schools' assessment practices to make sure internal assessment is:

  • accurate
  • consistent
  • to the national standard.

This is known as a Managing National Assessment (MNA) review. MNA reviews are part of how we quality assure education in Aotearoa.
