Excellence

Commentary

For Excellence, the student needs to interact skilfully in spoken Chinese (Mandarin) to share and respond to information, ideas, and opinions.

This involves successfully using interactive strategies that enhance the conversation and a range of language. Communication will not be hindered by inconsistencies.

The assessed student is on the left in both interactions.

The student has interacted skilfully in spoken Chinese using a range of language successfully, e.g. “你建议我们周末做什么活动”, “因为很多人说中文”, “我没还有去过”, and more complex language such as “我们应该按照你刚才说的去做”. The student referred to present events and experiences as well as the future, by discussing when they are meeting and what they would like to do on the coming weekend, e.g. “周末你有空闲时间吗?你想什么时候见面?我们需要带什么”?

He has demonstrated interactive strategies that enhance conversation: engaging with his partner by asking a range of relevant questions to keep the conversation going, responding properly to questions asked, showing flexibility by agreeing with his partner’s suggestion and asking further questions based on the partner’s plan, seeking advice when needed, and referring to something mentioned earlier.
