Clarification for AS 91487: Examine the different values placed on art works

Clarification details

Updated August 2015. This document has been updated to address new issues that have arisen from moderation.

The intent of this standard

The intent of this standard is that students examine the different values placed on art works.

Values

This refers to the relative worth or importance placed on an art work by individuals, societies and other groups. The importance, or lack of importance placed on an art work may reflect economic, cultural, national and other considerations that are important to the individuals or groups who perceive particular merit or power in the art work

The selection of art works

The selection of art works may be made by the teacher or individual student. Care must be taken to ensure that the selected art works provide students with the scope to explain and analyse different values placed on art works.

Evidence

The examination of different values may be done as a class or group exercise, however the assessed response must be individual. Teachers may use a range of activities, e.g. posters, oral presentation, digital commentary, essay, however, written or recorded evidence is required for moderation purposes. Acceptable explanations may be in the form of notes or annotated images; however bullet-pointed lists of single words will not provide sufficient evidence for the achievement of this standard.

Supporting evidence

Supporting evidence is relevant information that is used to support the explanations and analysis of the different values placed on art works. It does not include general information that is not linked to the required discussion of values. Supporting evidence may be derived from different sources, including specific aspects of selected art works.

Grade level indicators

  • An achievement level response will typically consist of explanations of the different values placed on selected art works, supported by relevant evidence.
  • Merit understanding will be demonstrated by the analysis of the different values placed on art works, using supporting evidence.
  • At Excellence, insight will be apparent in the integration of supporting evidence in the analytical discussion of the different values placed on the selected art works, leading to pertinent conclusions.
