Guide to preparing for TAPA assessments
Our short guide to preparing for TAPA assessments contains a list of the important information and support available for ākonga and kaiako in preparation for Te Ao Haka TAPA assessments.
If ākonga are unsuccessful or cannot complete a TAPA assessment
If ākonga attempt 1.3 TAPA 1 and are not successful, can they sit 1.3 TAPA 2?
No, they cannot. Ākonga may only attempt one external assessment per standard.
If ākonga are entered for TAPA 1 but can't complete it
If ākonga are entered for TAPA 1 but can't complete the assessment (for example, due to being māuiui or a tangihanga) can they be entered for TAPA 2 instead?
Yes. If an ākonga is absent from TAPA 1 (for example, due to being māuiui or a tangihanga), they can be entered for TAPA 2 instead.
Derived grades
What are the eligibility requirements for a derived grade?
If an ākonga is absent from TAPA 1 (due to being māuiui or attending a tangihanga, for example), they can be entered for TAPA 2 instead.
If an ākonga becomes māuiui during a TAPA (after they have already logged on and begun the assessment), they will receive a result for that assessment and will need to apply for a derived grade.

Need help submitting ākonga entries?
Entries are submitted by the Principal Nominee (PN) at your school or kura.
When submitting entries, please ensure the ākonga is entered into the correct assessment opportunity for example TAPA 1, TAPA 2 or Kete Manarua. The PN should engage their School Relationship Manager for support in this process if needed.
If the PN experiences any issues regarding entries, they should contact the Data team at schools@nzqa.govt.nz
