Changes to NCEA and UE for 2022
The Associate Minister of Education has announced changes to NCEA and UE for 2022 including the availability of Learning Recognition Credits, changes to the threshold for Certificate Endorsement and a change to the requirements for University Entrance.
Portfolio submission dates for the following subjects have also been moved back by one week:
- Technology (NCEA Levels 1-3 and NZ Scholarship)
- Design and Visual Communication (NCEA Levels 1-3 and NZ Scholarship)
- Education for Sustainability (NCEA Level 3)
- Dance (NZ Scholarship)
- Music (NZ Scholarship)
- Health and Physical Education (NZ Scholarship).
The dates for Visual Arts and the Digital Technologies and Hangarau Matihiko Common Assessment Task (DCAT) are not changing.

The Ministry of Education is also considering additional support for students to do catch-up learning so they can complete their qualifications before leaving school. Where that learning extends into 2023, NZQA will work with you to help students be awarded their qualification earlier in the year.
External assessment
Derived Grades in 2022
Students absent from an examination in 2022 will be able to apply for a derived grade as usual.
Derived grades will continue to be available for COVID-related reasons such as:
- self-isolating following Ministry of Health guidance
- isolating following a COVID test
- COVID symptoms at the examinations
- compromised immunity.
In case students are prevented from completing end of year external assessment - or their performance in the assessment is impaired - it is important schools collected valid, standard-specific evidence and submit this to NZQA for use as a Derived Grade.
