General principles for internal and external assessments
Special Assessment Conditions (SAC) are not appropriate when:
- assessment integrity may be compromised
- the standard's assessment objectives may be compromised
- it may give a student an unfair advantage over other candidates.

Internal assessments
Schools should provide SAC for all assessments unless there is a clear and considered reason for not doing so. They use their professional judgement to decide if a student’s use of SAC is appropriate for a particular assessment.
There is no list of internally assessed standards that exclude SAC.
Schools need to consider:
- student needs and required conditions of assessment in each situation
- the general SAC principles that guide assessment for all standards, the general principles of assessment, and the achievement criteria and explanatory notes for each standard
- how manageable SAC is for the student for each standard.
Sometimes an alternative approach to assessment (for example, a video or podcast) may better meet the student’s needs without compromising the integrity of the assessment.
Students can also use assistive technology for internal assessments if it's used in a way that's consistent with the above principles.
All assessment must be credible: valid, verifiable and authentic.
External assessments

Extra Writing Time support
In specific exam sessions Extra Writing Time can replace a student’s use of a computer or a Writer.
Any student approved for Computer Use or Writer (but not Extra Writing Time) can choose to use Extra Writing Time instead of the Computer or Writer in these sessions.
The option applied to full sessions only, not individual standards. Students may use the Extra Writing Time option only if entered for 3 standards in a 3-hour session or for NZ Scholarship.
External standards with SAC exclusions
The following tables show the Level 2, 3 and NZ Scholarship externally assessed standards with exclusions for specific SAC assistance.
Part excluded (Writer)
The Writer can annotate the graphs and maps drawn by the student and can write the rest of the answers.
Part excluded (Reader)
A Reader for Languages can read only the instructions or questions written in English.
