Certificate endorsement Whakamananga ā Tohu

When students perform consistently above the 'Achieved' level, their result(s) can be 'endorsed' to reflect that high achievement. If a student gains 50 credits at Excellence, their NCEA will be endorsed with Excellence. Likewise, if a student gains 50 credits at Merit (or Merit and Excellence), their NCEA will be endorsed with Merit.

Classification Whakarōpūtanga

A way of categorising a qualification. The NZQF uses the New Zealand standard classification of education (NZSCED) system; NZSCED provides common statistical classifications aligned with the International standard classification of Education (IESCED). All qualifications on the NZQF are assigned a six digit code from the NZSCED system.

Comparable Whakataurite

Comparable qualifications are qualifications that are similar enough to be compared and recognised.

Comparability of qualifications means qualifications are similar in terms of the qualification level, intent, purpose and content. In other words, taking into account the diversity of eucation systems, they are not substantially different.

Compatible Urutau

The term compatible is used in the context of European countries referencing their national qualifications frameworks with the Framework for Qualifications of the European Higher Education Area, commonly known as the Bologna Framework and the European Qualification Framework for Life Long Learning. The term compatiblity is used to establish a system-to-system level agreeability or harmony of national qualifications frameworks level descriptors and qualifications definitions.

Competence Āheinga

The ability to apply particular knowledge, skills, attitudes and values to the standard of performance required in specified contexts.

Consent and moderation (CMR) requirement (Ngā) Hiranga Whakamana, Whakaōrite

A CMR is an approved document, listed on the Directory of Assessment Standards (DAS), that sets out, for the standards listed in its scope:

  • the nature of the process for granting consent to assess
  • involvement of the Standard Setting Body (SSB) and others in the process
  • Requirements for Consent – industry or sector-specific requirements for granting organisations consent to assess against standards in the scope of the CMR
  • Moderation Requirements – the national external moderation process which organisations with consent to assess will need to engage in.

Approval of a CMR is required for the listing of standards on the DAS. Every standard listed on the DAS cites the number of the CMR that applies to it.

Consent to assess Mana aromatawai

Consent to assess certifies education organisations to assess unit or achievement standards and award credit for them (consents given under section 449 of the Education and Training Act 2020).

Consistent Ōrite

Refers to assessment. Assessment is consistent where, given similar circumstances, the assessor would make the same judgement again and the judgement will be similar to judgements that other assessors would make.

Course endorsement Whakamananga ā- Hōtaka

Course endorsement provides recognition for a student who has performed exceptionally well in an individual course.  If a candidate gains 14 credits or more at either merit or excellence level in a recognised course they will receive an endorsement of either Merit or Excellence.

At least three of these credits from externally assessed standards and three credits from internally assessed standards. Note, Physical Education, Religious Studies and level 3 Visual Arts are exempt from this condition.
