Evaluation Aromātaitanga
Evaluation uses a defined system to decide how important, valuable or high-quality something is. Evaluation decides whether something is good or not, and why.
NZQA uses evaluation for processes where applications must meet certain standards or criteria. It lets NZQA make decisions it can explain and defend.

Evaluative quality assurance Anga aromātai me te whakaū kounga
The evaluative quality assurance framework (EQAF) is an integrated framework focusing on the outcomes of tertiary education, the key processes contributing to those outcomes, and the maintenance and improvement of these outcomes through TEO self-assessment. The EQAF consists of:
- initial entry processes for qualification listing, programme approval and accreditation, training scheme approval, registration of PTEs, assessment standards registration and consent to assess
- processes for maintaining consistency of graduate outcomes and moderation of tertiary assessment
- self-assessment by TEOs
- external evaluation and review
- responses to non-compliance with the Education and Training Act 2020.

Evidence Taunaki mōhio
Evidence for assessment is anything a learner produces that can show their performance in a certain skill or area of knowledge.
Any evidence used for assessment must be:
- valid (focuses on what the standard is assessing and any requirements)
- direct (as similiar to a real context as possible)
- authentic (the work of the learner being assessed, with no outside influence or input)
- sufficient (shows that the learner can meet all the criteria, consistently and to standard they need to).

Examination centre Pokapū whakamātautau
A site where candidates sit external examinations.
A site needs a minimum number of candidate entries in a written exam to be an examination centre.
NZQA can establish special external examination centres if some candidates can't access a suitable site.

There is a separate examination paper for each standard with an external assessment, though not for portfolio assessments.
This could be paper or digital, or modified to fit Special Assessment Conditions.

One examination session runs for 3 hours. Candidates have that long to sit all NCEA examination papers for a specific subject and level.

Examiner Kaiwhakamātautau
An Examiner writes an examination paper, with the help of a Materials Developer.
Examiners are experts in the subject they are creating the examination paper on. They are usually teachers or university lecturers in the subject.

Two or more standards might assess the same skills and knowledge.
If they do, learners can have all the standards on their Record of Achievement. However, only one of the standards can count towards NCEA, a course endorsement and University Entrance.

When someone outside of the learning institution or school assesses the learners and makes the judgment on their performance.
For example, end of year examinations or portfolios for students at secondary school.

External Evaluation and Review (EER) Te aromātai me te arotake tarāwaho (EER)
Refers to the external review function of the evaluative quality assurance framework.
EER by NZQA is an independent evaluation of:
- a tertiary education provider that leads to a statement of confidence by NZQA in the provider's educational performance and organisational capability in self-assessment;
- a transitional ITO that leads to a statement of confidence by NZQA about the transitional ITO's organisational performance and organisational capability in self-assessment.

External moderation (Te) whakaōrite ā-waho
When someone from outside an education organisation looks at that organisation's assessment processes and activities.
Education organisations submit samples of their assessment for a certain standard. Then an independent external moderator checks if the assessment is fair, valid and consistent.
